starter gear hangs up
I have a 2000 e350 superduty with a 5.4. Long ago the original starter began to hang the gear up after starting. As I would begin to accelerate it would go back. I have since replaced it twice with brand new Duralast gold units and they have done the same thing since they were installed. Obviously the starter is not the problem, so what is? Is there something in the ignition switch that specifically deenergizes the solonoid to suck it back in that could be malfunctioning? thanks for the help.

Could be the solenoid on the firewall sticking. Next time it does it, use a meter or test light and see if the side going to the starter still has voltage. It it does and the little terminal doesn't, then the solenoid is sticking.
