Do you have a manual transmission? I'm not sure on your model truck, but on many Fords the starters are different for automatic vs. manual transmissions. And if you put an automatic transmission starter in a manual transmission truck, you will constantly get a great noise.

From what I could tell from the Rockauto website there is no difference between the standard and automatic transmission starters on the 460 engine, so i think you can scratch that idea.
Sounds like the relay on the fender has contacts that are burned together. Do you have to unhook the battery cable to stop the starter?
If that turns out to be the problem, try to find one made in the US. Most of the china ones don't last. Or find a factory Ford one in the scrap yard. Even used Ford ones are better than the china ones.
If I in hook the cables it still sounds like it's engaged. It starts no problem but it is still grinding while motor is running with out cables attached.

I'm pretty sure you are mistaken.
There is definitely a difference in the 'stick out' between manual and automatic starters for 385/335 series engines.
Prior to 1983 there were no manual 460's in trucks, so they all took the longer starter.
