hey everyone i was just wondering if there are others out there with some 61-66 crew cabs. ive did some some searching and found a few pics and stuff but just curious on how hard they are to find? i bought a 65 from a junkyard in montana awhile back and was trying to find some history behind them. any info or pics would be great.
slddnmatt Welcome to FTE and the 61-66 forum, the nations truck stop.
Crew cabs are just as implied, trucks built for crews to work out of. The military, railroad companies, etc. bought and used them. Funny how about half of the trucks now have 4 doors or looks so anyways.
Ford outsourced their first ones to Crown coach, and took over the build itself. There is a Yahoo group for owners of them FordCrewCab61-79 started by Jon Puruit.
They were very popular in the northwest, which is why you found one in Montana. Oil companies and lumber companies used them. Also found in mining operations. There are two types of cabs, the Crown and the Ford as John noted. Each is distinct. Jon Puruit used to have an excellent web site about them but it's disappeared.
mine was a forestry truck originally. i had a 63 4X4 but it didnt have a lot of leg room for me and i had seen a crew sittin in a yard and seen one ata show one time and thought they were the coolest! so i had to fine one. found mine in a junk yard out of mazzula montana and went to get it a week later. ive had it for a few years no time to work on it but eventually i will. the hard part of finding one is done. thanks for the info ill try to post some pics
Bill, I don't know the inside of it but about the time that you are refering to, Ford started building them as well. The rear door is the main difference between them I think. The 66 was still built on the pre 65 frame and straight axle.
There is a nice photo here in the galleries of a red 66 on a later 4wd frame.
i know of one sittn on the out skirts of arizona and utah it was a 64 i think? it was a coach built one. it had a real stubby bed about 5' long. right after i bought mine a friend of mine drove up past our friends house ( which is about a 1/2 mile from mine) and there was a 65 crewcab! i havent seen it in awile, he put his on a newer 4X4 chassis with the v-10 in it. im gonna keep mine simple ,i have a 429 cobra jet to put in it. it'll get terrible gas mileage but it will sound great!
