Block Heater

I will be working in S/W Wyoming from Jan. until May. My question is - at night do I need to keep the block heater on all night or set it up on a timer to turn on at a specific time in the early morning.

Depends if u want to pay for it. Manual says leaving it plugged in overnight isnt a problem, to me it is a fire hazard so i have mine on a timer.

Going by the Scan Gauge II, it seems that about 3 - 4 hours is all you need to reach max temp of about 100 degrees.

3-4 hours should be plenty for the coldest days, less if it isn't very cold (above zero). Our biggest diesels will warm up in an hour or two if the temp is above -15.

Mine has always started fine so far but I plug it in regularly at -10 or lower and sometimes at 0 to -10. When you hit -30 to -40 it may be a good idea to keep it plugged in. I know -40 is possible in North West Colorado so I assume it is in SouthWest Wyoming.

We have many block heaters around that stay on all winter. I haven't seen any fires. When they short out they short in the heating element which is in the coolant so no ill effects. Once in a great while, (I've probably seen 2 out of 100 heaters do this in the past 12 years) you'll get a cord short right where it plugs in the heater but as long as you have a breaker on the circuit it will be ok.

This post is from a gas standpoint so If you have a diesel I would leave it plugged in below 10 degrees and for at least 2 hours.

I have read somewhere that more than 4 hours is just wasting your money. Everyone here seems to be in aggrement.
