Dealership Services Cost

Took my F250 7.3 in for servicing recently. After changing the oil I had them look it over and see what it might be in need of. Since I just obtained it and do not have service records, I thought it might be a good idea. It recently started driping just a spot of oil on the drive, very minor however and had them look at that. They indicated the right valve cover leaked a little. They wanted $295.00 to put on a new gasket. It has 130,000 miles and they indicated it would need the 4 wheel drive unit, front and rear serviced $400.00. Also said the CAC tubes would need to be cleaned $100.00.

I have pretty much done my own mechanical work my entire life and at the same time realize diesel is a little different, but how in the h*** can they charge $295.00 to put on a valve cover gasket? Also, I'm hoping someone here can explain what the CAC tubes are and how I can do this myself. Also, what does servicing the 4 wheel drive unit consist of. I've never even put this vehicle in 4 wheel drive. Are these prices typical and are they warranted for the work that they are quoted for.

That is why we call them Stealerships.

A vc gasket is about 80 bucks http://www.dieselsite.com/index.asp?...ROD&ProdID=638

CAC are the silver tubes that run from the turbo ti intercooler (driverside) and intercooler to intake (passenger side) remove clamps remove pipes cleam with detergent (plug intake holes while cleaning).

4 wheel drive service ? changing the fluid is all i can think of, not hard if you can remove 2 plugs and then put them back in http://guzzle.rbmicro.com/transfer.html

If you have got the time, it is all very easy stuff to do. Don't let the diesel scare ya, I think they are relatively simple. Read a few threads on here each day and you'll quickly learn how easy it can be.

The only major headbanger you are going to run into here with these diesels is the parts cost. Parts for these trucks run a tad higher than for gassers.
Stealerships run at 80+ an hour these days. My time may be valuable, but not so much that I'm going to throw away 80 bucks an hour for something I CAN do...
In this area, getting into the dealership to have work done is not difficult...just don't expect it BACK real soon. we left one F350 at the local international shop for two months and they never DID figure out where it went wrong. a week in my yard and with the help of folks like Alan and TENN and it was back on the road!
Good bunch, these guys are.

I've got both time and tools and I can already see that plenty of guidance is available here. Thanks and I'm sure to be here looking for advice frequently.

BTW bazooka, the valve cover gaskets on these trucks are re-usable unless they are severed. Perhaps tightening down a bolt or two will cure that problem but if not, you certainly can replace them yourself at a fraction of the cost and with minimal time. Not that much different than a gasser.

Sounds like thery're made from rubber as opposed to cork or other lesser materials. Is any type of permatex, silicone or other material used when installing?

No you don't use any kind of sealant. They are kind of like plastic.Your glow plug wires and injector wires go through them thats why they are little high on cost.

BTW, if you're going thru the trouble of getting the valve cover off, be sure to inspect the injector harness for proper connectivity where it goes thru the cover and for abrasions caused by sloppy installation.
