First time psd buyer

Looking to buy my first psd. I have narrowed it down to two trucks. First off, both are 2wd,swb, xlt, 105k miles priced at 12,900. One is a 99 with the 5spd the other is a 00 with the 6 spd. Which tranny will give me the least problems, I have read about the od probs with the 6 spd. Thanks for any input or opinions.

There have been a couple of instances recently about the OD on the 6 speed but compared to the number of post about the 4R100 auto I still belive it is an excellent tranny. I have no experience with the 5spd.
Check this link out before you go look at them https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/5...questions.html

Does the 99 have a different turbo than the 00? What is the diff. between a 99.5 and a 99?

The early 99's had a smaller turbo and were rated at less HP.

The HPOP had a 15* swash plate and could not provide as much oil to fire the injectors compared to the 17* HPOP's on the later trucks. This only need to be considered if you are planning HP mods in stock form it is fine.

Yes, the 99 is different if it is a PRE 99, a build date in 98 for engine related. And then for the front suspension and axle components, March of 99 is cutoff. I have a pre 99, nothing to be afraid off just a little harder to get upgrades for. If given the choice between a pre 99 or late 99 and up, I'd go late 99 and up because of HPOP size and injector size. Turbo is larger, intake plenums are larger. No worrying about will it work on a pre or not, just would be easier. But, I learned all about that after I bought mine so go figure.

Well I test drove the 99 yesterday. It has the six speed also. Called the previous owner from info in the glovebox and he mentioned the truck would use about 2 qts of oil between oil changes. Is that semi-normal? He said that he had a chip installed and still made between 20-25 mpg on the highway. That impressed me. Also new clutch at 80k. What do normally see in oil comsumption??

It would depend on the interval length between the oil changes, but I wouldn't be surprised if many people do.. I change my oil so often that I don't notice oil consumption anywhere near that..

He was saying 3500 between oil changes. He was getting 20-25 mpg on the highway, what could you expect with the auto tranny? Anything close to that??

No, not unless you were constantly going downgrade with a tail wind.

I don't know. My '99 gets right around 20 mpg pretty consistently. My '02 on the other hand is lucky to get 15 mpg. The difference in the two is the 4x4 and the wheels and tires.

You're not going to get 25 mpg in a psd. There is a truck in diesel power getting that with mods I believe would take the "truck" out of the truck, (might as well buy a car) but that is my opinion. Expect a high of 18. Some get up to 20, I'm sure not one of them. All in all great trucks at great price. Seller is just trying to make a selling point telling you 25 mpg, not buyin the fuel mileage myself.

I usually average about 17 mpg in summer time, less in winter. I can add 2 qts after about 3 or 4 months of average use. Maybe 4k miles or so, have 105K on the clock. But I usually change my oil spring and fall going to a lighter oil in fall for the winter months. I wouldn't be worried about it.

Yeah, around town, it isn't going to happen. On the freeway though, like between Houston and San Antonio, my '99 will easily get 20 mpg. During the evacuation for Hurricane Rita it did it between Houston and Dallas and we laughed at all of the poor saps that were sitting along the freeway with no fuel.
