Alternator had gone bad. So here it is, Friday before Christmas and all the warehouses tthe dealer geta parts from and other dealers either did not have a Fomoco part or were closed.. All of them are closed until after Christmas.
I got a loaner under the warranty, no charge. A brand new Taurus. I feel like I'm in a shoebox after driving the truck.
I'm going to go into withdrawl. My baby will be gone for almost a week!!!!
My '05 EX had the Alternator die as well, after only 40k miles.
The high-desert dealer would not cut me any slack on the 36K warranty, and would not have had another one except I went to the parts dept. and ordered one at 9am. I was on vacation and needed it to be fixed.
$379 for the Alternator and $180 to install it.
Rape.
I installed a $12.99 volt meter that plugs into the power-port on the dash, very cool, and noticed the voltage still getting low in the morning.
I just (yesterday) replace the passenger side battery, it tested out internally shorted. I think maybe it had been making the alternator work too hard for a long time.
You might check into the same possibility.

Had the same problem with mine. Dealer finally found the problem, a CAM sensor, whatever that does. Told me that they would only be able to find it by having it towed in without restarting it. Restarting cleared any codes they might find. It finally did it in the driveway, sent it away right then. Haven't had that problem since.

Cam Position Sensor. Very common for them to go out. So much so, that it's widely talked about on the PSD boards to the point it's become "common knowledge" for those that visit UBB's on a regular basis.
Do a search on "CPS" and you'll find tons of reading. They are very easy to change out, and a lot of us carry a spare in the truck with us, just in case. Ebay is the cheapest place you can get the CPS, still in the Ford OEM package.
Just curious, how much did the dealership charge you for the diagnosis and replacement of yours?
As the previous owner of 14 Taurus' I can say with confidence that I would be fighting the temptation to end my life if forced to surrender my Ex for a bull.
