2001 Ranger
I'm about to pick up a 2001 short bed 4 cyl 5 speed to commute with so I can try and avoid the mileage I get from my 92 F-150. Anything I might need to look out for besides the ordinary stuff I would look at?

Welcome to FTE.
Other than the "normal" stuff and maybe a tune-up, there is one issue with the transmission you have. The shift rail plugs (top rear center of the transmission) leak over time and will run the fluid level down to the point the bearings get eaten.
They are three black rubber plugs. Either remove and seal and replace (with RTV or the like) or replace with metal freeze plugs.
