I wonder how cold it would have to be to freeze an engine block? I know several of our members live in the mountainous areas where temps drop substantially. Has everybody in these colder areas drained their blocks in trucks parked outside or at least made sure that they have an appropriate mix if antifreeze? I seem to recall that we heard from somebody in Canada last winter having a busted block. Jag
I am sure those who live in the cold have already done what was needed. At around 30 the water turns to slush, and the engine is likely to overheat if run.
Below that it is a mater of time and temperature when it comes to damaging the blocks. Overnight at 25 degrees will break most, but a quick drop to 23 for an hour may not.
Mostly it is the IO units of boats that are in danger - you would be surprised how many people store their boats in a heated shop and do not perform the cold weather shut down procedure. If they lose power for long enough the boat engine freezes.
What about desel fuel? Have they refind it to a point you no longer need to worry about the wax in it turning solid in the cold? We used to run summer and winter fuel with the winter fuel pink in color.
It was 14 below a couple of nights ago at my work. I forgot to plug in my diesel truck and it was very hard to start. I sure am glad that I keep 50/50 antifreeze mix in my cooling system. Alot cheaper than the consequences of a frozen block.
I run 50/50 in all my rigs all year, works like a charm unless ya spill the hot stuff on ya.
I have a garage too, that even houses my two rides even.
I did have to leave the Ranger out for afew days earlier while it was cold and it killed my battery, but it was a 10 yr old die hard so I wasn't complaining to much.
Course if I hadn't left the lights on one mornin at the docs it would have lasted longer. Pretty embarrassing to call down to the ECC and ask someone for a jump. They asked if it was cash, creidt, AAA or beer, course I said beer and 5 minutes later I was on the road. Still gotta get the beer .
