Smile Tire pressure

Hi, just got a nice '00 X 4wd 7.3 PSD.
However it doesn't come with any info on tire pressures.
I've just gotten hold of a set of studded Mastercraft 123-load 265/75-16 tires, it says max pressure is 80, but that seems way too high. Any suggestions for winter-driving w. snow & ice?
BTW: I love the truck already, had a lifted '99 F-250 with a 6.8 a few years back, but I love my "new" X.

Merry X-mas everybody!!!

80psi is the pressure at which the tires have their maximum load carrying capacity. If you used the truck to haul heavy load, say 1,000lbs up to max, you would want to use this pressure. This keeps the tire from deforming too much and generating too much heat and comming apart. For just daily driving, I would say somewhere between 50-60psi should give you a decent ride, and you could still carry a fairly heavy load without having to find an air supply to air up the tires. Good luck.

My manual says 55 psi for rear and 45 psi for front tires.

whatever the tires say on them is where you want to ride them, I have a 2005 f150 tat came with general tires on it they were of the passenger class and it was rateing for 35psi but the day i got the truck i puled them off and went with a set of hercules in an LT tire and i run tem at about 45 unless i am loaded then i max them out to 50 i run them a little lower for the softer ride that they offer but i would look at running your tires at or just below max pressure. one thing to remeber is that a good snow tire is usually narrower then stock so that it cuts thru to the bottom where it can get traction and not float on top. Just like an ice skate does not a snowshoe.

I have an 02 and the recommended tire pressure is located inside the fuel door. My X tire pressure is 50 in the front and 55 rear. DO NOT run the pressure that is on the tires. That pressure is generally too high and will wear out the center of your tires. When I bought my X the gentleman had the pressures at 65 PSI which is the max recommended pressure for the tires and I had to purchase new tires because the center tread was gone.

I run 295/75R16s (LI123) on my 01 X 4WD LTD (with a 1.6" lift front and rear ++). The shop delivering the custom package recommends 48 psi front and 46 psi rear for this combination (low load) from their research and testing.

Look on the door post on the driver's side. It has a sticker that gives the reccomended pressures for front and back.

Exclamation Caution!!

This was part of the Firestone/Ford fiasco!! Ford was recomending too low a tire pressure (and Load range D) for a better ride. There was a recall that was to scrape off the door post so that people wouldn't follow those instructions. In general, load range D (8 ply) will have a max psi of 45, Load range E (10 ply) will have a max psi of 80. Most tire manufactures do not recomend running them any lower than 10-15% below that at any load. For a load range E tire, anything less than 65 psi is a recipe for high wear at best and catastrophic failure at worst.

Don't follow your door sticker until you verify it!! And if you don't have your original tires, it probably won't apply even if it was correct when it left the factory. Follow the tire max for loaded and NO LESS THAN 85% empty!

Really? The load range "D" BFGs I had on my old F350 had a maximum pressure stated on the sidewall as 65 PSI. Likewise, the load range "E" Nitto tires I had on my last Excursion also had a maximum pressure stated as 65 PSI. The load range "E" tires on my current Excursion have a maximum pressure stated as 80 PSI ... and I keep 'em at 65 PSI at all four corners ... and 65 PSI is only 81% of 80 PSI according to my calculator.

I have Scorpions and they are supposed to run at about 55-60# w/o a load and then 80# for towing.. I'm pulling about 9K# with a tongue weight of just below 1K# and when I forgot to pump them up,you could really tell it as there was a whole bunch of extra side to side sway in the rear end. When I aired them up to 80#,there was a world of difference...

my bad...LR D max is usually 65 can be run around 55 (some people run at 45 but I wouldn't)

Tire design (tall/low profile, etc.) will dictate the actual number, follow the tire manufacturers guidance!

65 is a nice round ballpark easier than 68...and I start getting noticibly more wear when it falls below 65.

Did Ford ever change the 45/55 recomendation for the X when they upgraded to load range E tires? I don't want to go too far afield of the door sticker without authorization from Ford. Common sense tells me that load range E tires at the recommended pressures will be stronger than the same pressures with load range D tires. Most manufactures have a chart for recomended inflation pressures with weight on each tire. I couldn't find one for my Scorpions.

Are you sure? Usually they are recommended pressures.

The tire pressurre settings in the door jamb are for NORMAL everyday driving. If the vehicle is used for heave towing, then slight air pressure adjustments can be made to the tires. Remember, running more pressure than recommended could wear the tires unevenly..........
