I have a windstar van that I am going to change all the intake gaskets on. I have heard about a TSB that says you also need to change the bolts also. Which bolts need to be replaced? I plan on replaceing the gaskets between the heads and intake and the 2 piece top part. Is the bolts a dealer item only?
Well I just finished putting on the new gaskets on the intake today. The van now runs better than it has in a long time. The bolts I was asking about are called isolater bolts that hold the bottom plastic intake to the metal intake that mates to the heads. From what I have found out the Bolts are a dealer item only. I haven't changed them out yet but am planning on in the near future.
I have drove the van around some and no check engine light! I even hooked up a scan tool to it and the fuel trim looks alot better. It doesn't have to adjust the fuel trim near as much as it did before the gasket change.
I found a good resource for doing the gasket change if there is anyone that thinks that they may have to do it also. This only covers 3.8's with the codes p0171 and p0174.
Hmm....I changed those gaskets out for the same reason you did, never even occurred to me to change the bolts. I may need to go back in and do that as the "fix" only lasted about 4 months before it started throwing the CEL again with the fuel trim codes.
Cookie88- Sent you a email (with links)that shows step by step instructions and a link to the TSB about the vavle cover and bolts. Not sure but this mostly has to do the Windstar.
I am having the same problem with my Windstar. Also can hear what sound like a vac leak, so I have to get in there also. Can you send me the info also? Thank you very much!
Sure can s1120- I would have just posted the link but I wasn't sure if it was allowed. I love this site and don't want to lose the opportunity to use it. It is suppose to baisicly be for the 99-03 windstars.
We tend to frown on links to competitors websites, but we don't have a Windstar forum, so I think it would be ok here. Especially considering the number of Windstar/3.8 questions that get posted to this forum.

Thanks got it. Mine is a 96, but looks to be the same setup as the 99+

Ranger, I am getting ready to have to change head gaskets out in my daughters 92 Taurus with a 3.8 and I need all the resources I can get. I didn't do any code scanning but I did see the steam coming from the exhaust and water in cylindor #4(first cylinger on left front bank). Can you email me the good source?
FRECSF - The link i was describing was for 1999 to 2003 Windstars that had a leaking intake gasket and caused the CEL to come on and have the codes P0171 and P0174. If you send me your email address I can send you the link.
I have done a head gasket replacement before on a Tbird with a 3.8. The best thing you can have is a repair manual. I'll look and see what other websites I can find.
