Let's say you have 3 people sharing a 2 bedroom dwelling. For simplicity, we'll say the rent is an even $1K per month. 2 people are sharing one bedroom, one person gets there own. Both rooms are near identical, save for the single person's bathroom is also the main/guest bathroom. What would be a fair price for the person with their own room to pay? Half seems a bit steep, he isn't getting 1/2 the entire place, just half the bedrooms. 1/3 doesn't seem fair to the other's. Where would you split it at?
I have number in mind, but would like to hear from some uninvolved parties. Thanks .
Less importantly: Would you split the rest of the bills accordingly (water, electric, internet) assuming fairly even usage? Go straight 1/3rd?
i did this right after moving out of my parents house when i turned 18. everyons pays an equal share. 3 people=split it in 1/3rds. It's that simple. I moved in with a friend and his girlfriend. Bills were the same way split equally. he paid 2/3 of the bills i paid 1/3. worked out great. just get everything in writing and all parties involved HAVE to be on the lease. THIS IS A MUST!!!!!!
If anyone skips they are liable.
I agree, 1/3rd each person. unless the 2 people sharing the one room are a "couple", maybe the one with thier own room could pay for the entire cable bill to off set having one bedroom to them self. The rest of the bills are to be split 1/3 rd all around. No exceptions.
Interesting, I'm the one who would have their own room, and yes, the other 2 are a couple (I know better than to live with my GF ). As much as I would like to save a couple bucks, I'm more interested in it being fair. I'm not sure I consider 1/3 fair to the couple.
I can see both sides, but I'm getting 1 bedroom and 1/3 of the other space, they each get 1/2 bedroom and 1/3 the other space (discounting the bathroom situation, which isn't a big deal). It just doesn't add up to me. I might propose the cable thing (internet instead actually, none of us watch much TV) and 1/3 rent.
Thanks for the advice (and with a quickness!). Anybody see what I'm saying? Am I just trying to be "too fair"?
They would probably go for it (1/3), but I hate feeling like I'm getting the upper hand, especially with friends involved. Things being unequal bothers me, even if they are in my favor.
I would tend to agree but if I'm catching this right the couple has a private bathroom. If this is the case then I'd say 60/40. I say it's more about the bedrooms then the people in them.

50/50 on the rent and 1/3 on utilities.
[edit]Upon further review, because yours is the common bathroom (not private) for the rest of the joint, I agree with OS about maybe an extra 5-10% to the couple.
60/40 or maybe even 55/45 on the rent 1/3 on utilities.

Make it easy and do 1/3's. If they don't like it they can find something else. Me, my wife and my sister are going to split everything in 1/3's. We both have our own bathrooms etc. If my mother-in-law moves in i'll go insane and have to split it 4 ways and make my wife pay both 1/4's.. wishfull thinking.

The problem with making the couple pay 2/3's is that for $666 + maybe a $100 more they may be able to just get a 1 bedroom joint......
and not have to worry about all the drama roomates will ultimately bring.
