Yeah,i know I used quality and cheap in the same sentence. What is a good brand of impact sockets that I won't have to sell my firstborn to be able to afford? a local store would be best, because I really need it in the next couple days and don't have time to wait on the mail, especially since it is the holiday season. I have these auto stores in driving distance: oriely's(sp),auto zone, and advance auto. And these home improvement/department stores: home depot, lowes, kmart, walmart, and sears.thanks,Ben
Sears has a limited selection in stores.
Husky at Home Depot, are made by Stanley. They also tend to have more then my local Walmart or Sears.
Never seen Kobalt impacts locally.
For limited use, even HF are ok. But better to get Chrome Moly then Chrome Vanadium (thinner wall, better metal).
I'll second the Kobalt/Lowes house brand. I haven't broken my set of impacts from them yet, and I've used them for a lot of other purposes than impact sockets
I have both a metric and SAE deep set from Harbor Freight and have abused the hell out of most of the sockets, ALL of the larger ones. I have yet to have one fail in 10 years of use but I don't use them every day. I also have an SAE short set and have used a few of them with no failures.
BUT there was one 3/4" socket that was split when I opened the set from the heat treatment process that they replaced. It did not inspire confidence but since then I have used them well.
I filled out the sets with a few more sizes frome HD, Husky brand, and those have not failed either.

A friend of mine and myself have used HF impacts for a few years now without problems. The only issue I have with them are they are a thicker wall which would limit you sometimes in tight spots. For professional use they might not be the best choice other than to start out or for a spare, but otherwise I wouldn't have a problem with them and they do have a lifetime warranty.
I'll second the cheap sets, thick wall statement. I have some cheap impacts I got over 25 years ago. Never failed. However there have been a few places they wouldn't fit. So I also have a few better ones in the sizes I need. As I bought these additional sockets individually I have probably spent enough to have bought a better set from the beginning. However the cost was spread out over many years and in the beginning I had a much thinner wallet than I do now.
I bought a set at one of those tool sales where it is advertised in local paper with a flyer insert. They were thick walled impact sockets with the brand "Cummins". So far they have been ok and I too have abused a couple of them. They won't get into every spot because of thickness, but they are still in one piece.
