Well today is my birthday. July 8th. Just posting a few thoughts. For me, birthdays are not that big a deal, right now anyway. Except maybe the milestone birthdays like the 30th, 40th, 50th and so forth. I like to make birthdays a big deal for others but I like the quiet simple things. A card perhaps and a cake to share with my family. No expensive gifts or fancy restaurants. A day like any other day really. My hair is thining, a few gray ones coming in. I'm ok with that. A little older and hopefuly a little wiser. I exercise and eat right most of the time. A father of four and grandfather of two. I still ride my motorcycle like there's no speed limit. I've had one speeding ticket, one warning and one crash so far but walked away. Fixed my bike after my insurance company totaled it. I have 42,000 miles on it now but she still runs like the day she was new. But for my wife, birthdays are a big deal. Not just for her but for everyone else. She likes to throw a party with all the guests. She cooks up a big feast even though I tell her she doesn't need to go through all of this trouble. I go along with it because I know this is a labor of love and part of her gift to me. She puts a lot of effort into it and I appreciate it. I find myself enjoying the company of my friends and family. I blow out the candles but still wonder what's the big deal. I guess part of it is because my daughters birthday is the day before mine so we celebrate together. I rather her have her own day all to herself. Oh well. Forty five now. In five more years I'll be middle aged. Birthdays are ok I guess, but for the most part, I'd rather just sit back with a glass of Merlot and watch a John Wayne movie. I think I'll watch the one I got for my birthday. :-)
I feel just like you, the last BIG ONE was two years ago.
I had a Party for 50, comprised of friends and family.
The theme of the party was Hawaii 5-0 so people had to dress Hawaiian.
We had a great time.
But you can't go watch JW until you have some cake.
That show was one of my dads favorites. We'd watch it every week. His favorite expression was.........you guessed it, "book'em Dano, murder one".
My parents went to Hawaii for our wedding. My wife is from there and all my inlaws are there. A Hawaiian theme might be just the ticket for our 25 wedding aniversary.
