Odd fuel pump issue

my 86 EFI 302 runs great on the front tank but I switched to the rear and it was fine for about 3 minutes the died like it was out of fuel, the gauge doen't work so I took the gas cap off the rear tank and wiggled the truck and I heard a good bit of fuel in it, tryed to crank it on the rear tank and it would not start so I switched to the front and it started instantly, switched back to the rear and about 2 minutes it started to bog so I pumped the gas and it backfired out the intake(lean) and it recovered was fine for about a minute then it started it again this time I was able to bring the RPM's up and it ran fine, the longer I run it the better it seems to be getting, I have it full of stabil and the fuel filter is new, it only has done it a total of 4 times
If it was a pump wouldn't not work at all??

The sock in the tank could be clogged, and yes the pump (you have a low pressure and a high pressure pump) could run and then cut off, check your pump ground wire.
