I was sure it was April 17th 1964 (New York World's Fair) when the Mustang was unveiled at the showroom

Windows at dealership's were soaped over so we coudn't see inside.

I have a Pre-world's Fair Mustang that was in the showroom for that day.

car #8092 (Apr 5/64) out of 8500 Built for that day.

You can see it in my gallery if you like.

Personally I have bought way too many things right after it/they came out.

Cameras,phones,computers,etc

Smile The Debate

Mustangs were first shown to the public on April 17, 1964 at the New York World's Fair.

Mustangs went on sale to the public on April 23, 1964. (I was working at Ralph Williams Ford in Encino CA then...'ol Ralph asked us employees to stay as long as possible after work to handle the crowds).

The original MSRP was $2365.00.

Life Magazine that week had a preview of the new Mustang. There was also an obit for General of the Army Douglas MacArthur who had recently died.

Mustang won the "Tiffany Award" for styling. Prior to the introduction of the Mustang, there was no such thing as the Tiffany Award. Lee Iacocca said..."This Car will be a sales success...we need an award to show to the public." The "Deuce" agreed. The "award" was a publicity stunt.

Maybe not directly from sales, but think about the attention the car brings to the brand. TV ads cost plenty. Did they bring in any money directly? I'd trade a one minute Superbowl ad for a year long look at a great car anyday. If they didn't make money on the sales then they missed out. Someone did. I'm sure some dealers are giddy over what they made and the attention it brought to their showrooms. If they sell way too fast, the dealers know how to handle that. Now that all the R&D has been done Ford should benefit more directly from future sales, if their smart enough to make more.

The GT was a great car and a flagship of sorts, but out of most peoples price range. I don't see it being missed by Joe public. With the new generation of shelby mustangs, now that will be a flagship that is in a lot of peoples price range. The shelby name is legendary as is the mustang. Thier even talking about a GT 350 version along with the GT 500 and a hertz rent a car version just like in the 60's. The GT was a great nich car, I believe the shelby's will do more to bring people in to the showrooms. Most people can a dentify with a shelby mustang, all but us diehard ford guy's don't even know what a GT 40 is or was. However, I would of liked to seen the GT 40 kept with a bit lower price tag to compete with the vette and viper as a true ford sports car in thier class. The mustang is the american afordable sports car, but it does have a back seat. there are some exciting things comming from the mustang camp, like the boss, bullet, mach 1 and shelby. "Still", I would like to have our own vette, viper and the GT would have fit that bill, if they could of gotten the price lowered a bit, at least in the viper range, 90,000$ or so.
