I had that happen on a 71 Comet/302. The po put the wrong starter in and in the cold weather the drive couldn`t reach far enough to engage, it took a while to find the problem.
I have that unique starter that was that long shaft styly, my engaging gear and whole setup is seized, seized bad I may have to find another starter it's bad.
Well I got her turning over on electricity, it is a sarter that is on its last legs but til I find one more adequate it'll do. 4 starters and that is the best I can come up with, Oh well It's turning (weak bu turnng) and has spark. (in one cylinder at leats).
I need one of those tape players that only says "we're happy"
Tommorrow I'll be trying her hopfully my luck changes and she'll go.
I tried her tonight but it got scrub bed as soon as I saw the fuel pump wasn't sucking that sucked. That was at 7 pm. by 9:30 I had one sucking and on but decided for a delay til tommorrow (not my night).
What hasn't gone wrong,
- 3 failed starters
- V belt nt fitting due to alternator(s)
- 2 fuel pumps
- corroded fuel line (expected to be I suppose)
- radiator leaks and rare 1.5 inch hose on top
- carb. still has wrong parts on it can't find right parts
- carb. hookup (modiefing I guess)
- soleiniod
- distrubitor had missing wire (my fault) but because the distrubutor at back wasn't fun to fix
- ignition key not trning ignition
- valve caps nobody ever heard of them so el if I know
- rocker arms (my fault not adjusted properly)

Nope, it just seems that way at times and this is one of those times.
All part of working with our old tin, it WILL run just keep at it one problem at a time.
It will be worth it when ever it does decide to cooperate, you`ll be smiling so hard from ear to ear that it will hurt.

Thanks, like usual you are exactly right. When I heard that first pop and toot I knew exactly why I spent 2800 in the damn thing. You're right that carb. starts it up right away can't hear the starter at all, but you gotta admit there is something classy about a Stromgburg 95.
