I currently have factory 18"X 7.5" wheels on my '05 150 FX4 4X4 and have a chance to trade for some 20" Factory wheels off of another '05 f-150 FX4. The stock 275/65/18 tires just don't look big enough after leveling the front and I have been wanting some larger tires to fill in the gap between the tires and the fenders. Most of the larger tire sizes recomend a wider wheel.
How wide are the factory 20's?
Should I make the trade?
I have an 06 Lariet with factory 20" wheels and Pirelli Scorpions and I feel the ride is extremely stiff. The tire profile between the wheel and the road is 1"between the 18 and 20 inch wheels. This seems to make a big difference. Good luck!
You should be aware that your tire sizes are extremely limited with that 20" hole. If the ride doesn't matter and the extra cost of the larger tires doesn't matter then go for it.
Only 4Ply reinforced tires are available in that 20" hole, you can get 10 ply tires in the 18" (275/70/18) so if you plan on doing any towing, stick with the 18s.
As far as wheel size, thats up to the individual. However since you have 18s and there are many more tire options for 18s, then I would use my money for a higher quality tire that is the size you want. Also people have been putting on wider tires than recommended for forever without any issue. If you go to your local mom and pop tire shop or one like 4wheelParts, they will tell you that you can put on a much wider tire than recommended. This also gives some more protection to your rims. Obviously there are limits to everything, but dont worry about exceeding recommendations if a tire shop says its ok.
There's hardly been any different 18" tire sizes either until just recently. I think about the same selection for 20" tires now too?
To answer your original question, if you plan to run the stock tire size on the 20's you trade for, they will not really fill out your wheelwell anymore than your current 18's. Because both tires (stock 18" and 20") have about the same overall diameter, 32".
4doorsr, man you got screwed on the tires. Check out discount tires or tirerack next time, you should be able to save $1000.00 or more! I saw the Pirelli 20" tires for about $130.00 a tire at tirerack!
I bought some 20" with the Pirelli's.I did not find it much harsher than the 18". I have upgraded to 285/55R20 BFG KO's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ Ride is still extremely comfortable with the Tri-Guard sidewall and an E load rating. I definately feel safer in the snow with the BFG product. Just had a hard time justifying the cost.
