I have a 254 Flathead Six in my '49 F1. I suspect the engine was from a '52 or '53 F6 although it might have been from a passenger car. Should I be using some sort of additive to protect the valves in these unleaded days or would it be a waste of money? Any advise is appreciated.
I'm no expert, but I was asking this same question awhile ago and here's the opinions I got. Some guys figure Henry was making engines before lead was added to gas, so they tell you to go ahead and use unleaded without fear. Others will say that the engines without hardened seats must have the lead.
A friend who works at NAPA and drives old trucks daily, suggests dumping in a can of lead substitute every other tank of gas. Thats what I'm doing at present. I'm still up in the air on the subject, but figure its the old chicken soup idea - may not do any good, but won't cause any harm either.
