97 4.2 engine missfiring

When I'm at highway speeds 55-60 mph, the engine will start missing randomly. It also does it goig up hills too. There are no engine codes coming up when it was checked. Do any of you know what it could be?

If it's at higher engine RPMs I might check fuel delivery, starting at the fuel filter. The missing is a harder one to diagnose over the net.

CHeck you oxygen sensors just by your engine mounts there should be 2 of then one on each side, if they are not sensering properly that will starve you engine on demand, just take them out and inspect them and see if they loo okay or perhaps just replce them one at a time

two slow,

Like LXMan stated, if it has never had plugs and wires I would start there. Fixed my 01 Screw w/167,000 on it. Only under a load would it miss. Runs like a new truck now.

That sounds like my problem. I've put plugs, wires, and fuel filter, coil pack and TPS on it. Mine is a manual. Sometimes when I take off in first it misses like four times before the RPM's get up. The lower the RPMs the worse it is. This can be felt going uphill. I think it keeps cracking spark plugs. The first few times I put new wires on it. Seemed to fix it for about a week, then it started missing again. The next time I bought new Autolite spark plugs. It fixed it for about 2 weeks and it started missing again. It turns out one of the plugs was cracked. SO I put another set in it MAKEING SURE THAT I DID NOT CRACK ANOTHER ONE if I cracked the one before. Fixed it for about a week. So I replaced them with Motorcraft plugs from Ford. Fixed it for about 3 months and it started missing again. So I tried another set. Fixed it for about a month and it is missing again. Right now I am driving it, skipping away, almost getting run over by everything on the road. Seems similiar to your problem. Any ideas?

it is worse when it is at lower rpms. When I put it under a load it improves some. I checked on plugs and they are recommending platinum plugs at $7.50 a plug. Ouch. I haven't gotten them yet.

Just go with OEM Ford Motorcraft plugs and wires. Everything else is just not worth it. You'll end up right back at them eventually.

Is it always the same plug that is cracked?
