Need to know if anyone else has similar problems...
1987 460, manual transmission bellhousing, flowtech 12560 headers. Going into a 1990 F350 4wd.
They don't even come close to fitting. Needed major grinding of the bellhousing around the starter mount and dimpling of the rear most header tube on the passenger side. There is no way that a stock size starter is going to fit. If I could get the starter in there (I can't), it would require denting the 2nd and 3rd tubes on the pass. side to at least half of their current size. I was expecting a little interference, but this is unacceptable.
I have just been trial fitting the headers with the engine on the stand, who knows what is going to happen when I get the engine in the truck and need to deal with framerails, x-member and steering shaft...
Anybody thinking about headers, I'd probably stay away from these. I've sent a complaint to their customer service, hopefully the feedback will be better than the product fit.
"Hello
That is the correct headers. If you are having that many problems I
would return the headers. If you have damaged the headers that will void
your warranty.
Thanks
Eric"
Now that's what I call customer service.
Anyone else using a different brand, have any recommendations?
i would either go get a newer (90+) gear reduction starter from a parts store and eliminate the starter clearance issue, or go get the l&l headers from broncograveyard.com... the starter is a much cheaper solution (only around 200 dollars vs 500 for the l&l headers) a cheap starter part # is #SUM-820048 from summitracing.com- its $149.95

Summit Racing is outstanding. They took back the Flowtech headers that I beat the crap out of to try to get them to fit with no questions asked. Refunded the purchase price and shipping cost within 5 days. I ended up buying the Hedman 89340 street header. I got the driver side header on last night in about 30 minutes, no issues yet. Passenger side fit will be the test.
