I Drive a 02 F350 with a 7.3L for my work and when I start it up in the mornings it lopes and shakes for about a minute then starts running normal. When I put it in gear and drive it when it is cold it can barely pull its own weight. I know diesels are slow when they are cold but this is rediculous. My 99 F350 does not do this. If anyone can give me an Idea what is wrong with it I would like to get it fixed?
First the rough idle. Check the glow plugs first, you may have a few out causing it to idle rough. If the glow plugs are fine, check the HPOP reservoir to see if it's low. Check this in the morning before you crank, it should be nearly full.
The lack of power when you start driving is probably due to your EBPV closing. In cold weather, it's normal to close to aid in warming the engine. However once you start driving it's supposed to open up. If the EBP sensor tube is clogged, it won't read a proper backpressure, and the valve stays closed. The tube runs from the passenger's side manifold up to the front of the engine where the sensor sits. Remove the sensor and clean the tube with a long wire brush. Also clean off the sensor and reattach.
Thanks, I will have to check those things next time I drive it. From what my boss has told me, they took it in and had the glow plugs fixed once already so I am wondering If it is the HPOP. How do you check the level? And what would cause the level to drop? It seems like all this started when I almost ran it out of gas one time. Could that have done something to it?
