I always clean the engine and all parts in the engine compartment by hand with a rag. If there is oil or grease that is hard to remove, I clean with a solvent like paint thinner. If you spray water in the engine compartment you will clean very few parts.

I use a rag and spray brake cleaner. Works great.

Simple Green on a warm engine, spray and let sit for a couple of minutes and spray off with water. Then treat rubber hoses with armor all.

I typically spray (with spray bottle) degreaser on about everything I can hit under the hood, and then rinse with water. Done at the car wash you have the option of high pressure which does take the grease and oil off quicker, but the only drawback I have found (being new to Fords) is that extra care should be taken around the distibutor to avoid getting it wet. After I have rinsed everything, Auto Magic makes a product called Super Dress-It, which is sprayed on. After the motor has run for awhile, the Super Dress It sticks like glue and keeps everything very glossy.

The only other problem I have had doing this, is on Chevy trucks where the windshield wiper motor does not like getting wet.
