Well I'm working on a Ford F-150XL 5.0 Automatic and need your assistance. Runs better but still stumbles at idle and when driving at steady speed below 50MPH or slowly pressing the accelerator it starts to shutter, as if losing ignition or fuel (off & on) but if I give it the gas it smoothes out and accelerates fine. Check timing and it's dead on 10 degrees BTDC as label calls for but after putting the stunt back in and restarting engine it seems to retard timing and idle will shutter until it advances back up and it will do that in cycles. Still holding the following TDCs:
Code 411-Cannot control rpm during KOER low rpm check
Code 565-Canister purge circuit failure
Blocked off vacuum to the purge valve and no change but the purge valve is opening at idle. Purge valve circuit getting proper voltage. Checked grounds under hood and they are intact and showing a good reading. Where else would you go? So far this is what has been changed:
TPS
IAC
Stator Assembly
Ignition Module (remote mounted on driver's side fender)
I had a similar problem on a 94 5.8. It ended up being a broken valve spring on the exhaust side of the #5 cylinder. If you can slide a test light in the individual plug wires at the cap, this should isolate which cylinder is giving you the issue. From there you can pull that vavle cover and take a look. If it is easier to just pull the covers and visually inspect save the test light step. Look carefully at the spring if broken it will look like it shifted position at the head. Also take a look at the push rods for one that may be bent if the springs look ok.
I know this won't be encouraging, but do a compression check. I had an 89 with the 5.0 and the exhaust valve and seat were burned for #8 and the wall between the intake and exhaust runners was cracked.
Same here on 2 F150 5.0 #8 valve. Both time had head checked and they just fixed bad valve . Rest all looked good and I put 50000 on one no problems and 100000 on other . Good luck
Get out of here with that kind of talk!! You all ain't helping my feelings a bit!! Lets hope that's not it. Doesn't really sound like a miss just shakes at idle and sounds like it's just cutting out at higher speeds when you level ut or slowly give it the gas. I was kinda leaning on the torque converter. It has shuttered in the past at shift points. Undone the MAF today and it seem to level out at idle in limp mode. What's the best way to get back there to the PVC??
With those codes and it acting that way I would say you have a vacuum leak.
One thing that does sound bad is the purge valve opening at idle unless you have a high idle.
The purge valve should only open with a warm engine at hi-way RPM. This is controlled by the PCM with information from the ECT and CMP sensors. This also goes for the EGR valve.
Of course you would have high RPM with a vacuum leak.
RPM - Revolutions Per Minute
PCM - Powertrain Control Module
ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature sensor
CMP - Camshaft Position - AKA Hall Effect or Stator sensor in the Distributor
I'm gonna get out there and put a tach on it and see what it set at but was trying to figure out a tach hook up without cutting wires. Does the Ford have a tach hook up for testing purposes? Icould find nothing in the wiring diagram. This Christmas stuff is hindering my repair work!! Thanks and it does seem like a vacuum leak and I'm having trouble locating it. I can't get to the PCV, but it's holding a steady 16 pounds.
TPS at idle position is .94 volts.
Idle is high around 1000 rpms.
Purge Solenoid Valve is being actvated when ignition is in on position.
Still showing 411 & 565 DTCs.
Vacuum steady at 17.
Compression test OK All between 145-150 psi.
Found vacuum leak at PCV and changed it out, seems to idle smoother but if you just crack the throttle it roughens up but give it a little more and it smoothes back out. Still accelerate great but will cut in and out at level speeds. It's so radical that it will jerk your head off and sounds like the drivetrain is fixing to go south.
