OK, I'm going to buy my first diesel. Looking for a F250 or F350 2wd to tow my travel trailer. Love my 5.4 F150, but just want more power, more brakes, and more truck.
With my budget, I am going to have to buy used, and with all the reading I've been doing lot's of folks love thier older 7.3's and lots of folks love thier 6.0's. I'm looking at 2000-2003's. Well 2003's have both!
What is your opinion on the differances between an older (2000ish) 7.3 or later model (2003 or 2004) 6.0. Also, is the later 6.0's better.
By 2003 the 7.3 was a robust, well-proven motor, while the 6.0 was a new engine that had a number of bugs...some of them serious bugs. I would lean towards a 7.3 if I was buying a 2003 model and reliability was my major concern. If you wanted more HP and better fuel mileage than the 7.3 can yield, then the 6.0 is probably your selection. In either case, have the engine checked out BEFORE you purchase. Proper maintenance is critical to these engines and they run in the $10k range if you have to replace a dusted engine/turbo.
With my budget, looks like I'll be looking for the 03 7.3 or earlier. Some folks have said to stay away from the 04's and don't get a 6.0 before the 05 model, but you say the ones with a build date of 1/1/04 are OK?
I have 2, 7.3s. One has nearly 200,000 miles and the other over 300,000 miles both are 00 and 02. We have changed wheel bearings, brake rotors and both transmissions rebuilt. We pull more than rated by about 10,000 lbs on a regular basis. Both trannies are built for what we are doing now. Should have longer life this time. Heavy pulling makes up at least half, if not more, of the mileage. Very happy with these trucks. Pretty much general maint. and go, go ,go.
We also have 2, 6.0Ls. There is an 05 and 07. The 05 as had no problems so far. That truck stock can out pull the others with mods. The trans. is great. The motor is very strong. We probably will put 4" exhaust on and nothing else. No real need.
What I'm saying is you can't go wrong with either. I believe the bugs are out of the 05s-07s If you want a little newer truck. The thing to remember is if you find a good 7.3 and you take care of it she will last a long time.

Thats what I'm hearing. Found a couple 40k mile 2000 and 2001's that I'm looking at, or I might just sit tight, save the pennies, and get and 05 next year.
40K on a 7.3 is nothing....not even broken in yet...
I got an 03 with 20K and cant be happier...If the 00-01 are in good shape(with only 40K) I hope so...I would save some cash and consider them..
i picked up mine 02 in september with 97k on the clock and it runs like a dream. doesnt have the get up and go of a 6.0 but it should be around for awhile. make sure that u get a carfax and a ford OASIS report to check out the truck before you buy it.
hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday season

I found a 2002 Crew Cab 2wd dually with 49k on it. Looking at it tomorrow. I had never heard of the Oasis report. I'm guessing either Ford pulls records from the VIN, or it's a specific service check?
OASIS = On-Line Automotive Service Information System
if there were any warranty work or any type of work done at the dealer there should be an oasis report on the work done. it's easy to do, just to into the stealership with the vin, and tell them that your considering buying the truck and they should run it for you. that way u can see the if there is any history with the truck.
