I have a 1998 Ford Expedition and we have not had any problems with it. This weekend I went to turn the car on while I put the kids in the car and it turned on just fine, but shut down after about three seconds. I turned it on again and the same thing. The third time I turned it on I kept my foot on the gas pedal and it stayed on. As soon as I took my foot off of the gas pedal it idled down and shut off. Does anyone know what this could be, and is it something I can fix by myself?!?
i was thinking IAC (idle air control) myself. if it is this it's a pretty easy fix. take the IAC out, clean it (or replace it), and put it back.
al
+1 on IAC valve
Had this issue before, removed and cleaned the valve and I'm still good after almost a year now.
Haynes has a good picture of it on page 4-13. Or search the forum about the subject. The part is not that expensive, so replacing it with a new one is your option - supposedly available in car parts store and not just in dealer.
Position of the valve will make the job a bit of a hassle but overall is not that hard a job. Can't remember the size of the bolt, should be in some threads here... Good luck.
Check the hoses going to the throttle body. If one comes off, the engine won't be able to idle. I also had a small leak in a hose that runs behind the throttle body that would cause the engine to die at idle.
Okay, I changed out the IAC valve and the truck is running perfectly fine! I had to go to three Auto Zones here in San Antonio to find the Haynes book, but found it.
IAC Vavle - $49.95
Haynes Book - $16.95
Sub Total - $66.90
Tax - $5.35
Total - $72.25
SURE BEATS THE HELL OUT OF $300 or $400 for a mechanic to fix it!
Thanks for your help, guys!
