i just moved to co springs from southern ca so my truck is not used to this kind of cold. this morning it was about 15* out and i cant plug in my truck because of where my appartment is, it started just fine but the starter was making almost a clunking sound. i have been driving it all day and every time i start it sounds like the starter is loose, there is some kind ofa rattling sound. i layed under the truck and had my wife start the truck a few times and it sounds bad. there is 92000 miles on this starter, does it sound like this one is dead? it sounds like it is going to me but i wanted to get another opinon.
sean, I had issues with my starter last year. Check the torque on the starter bolts. I had a bolt back out which caused my starter to bind. I had to replace the starter. I believe the bolts are torqued to 20-25 foot pounds. Hopefully, someone with manual will chime in and verify those torque values.
thanks guys for the info. i went out and bought a new rebuilt starter from pepboys for $170. that sounded steep to me but then they told me it has a lifetime warranty so i figured cool. so i drive home, about 7 minuted away, unbolt the old starter, which seemed kindof loose, and went to install the new one. of course it cant go this easy. i start to tighten down the batt cable and the plastic on the on the starter breaks in my hand. i didnt even put any pressure on it. so off with the new starter and on with the old so i can drive BACK to the parts store.(my wifes car is still in CA, all we have is my truck) long and the short of it is i had to drive 30 minutes in traffic one way to another pepboys to get my starter. its in now and my problem is fixed. sorry for the long winded reply but i needed to vent. thanks again guys, have a Merry Christmas.
