dumb question about auto trannys

Having just read about the torque converter I'm left wondering - do automatic transmissions even have gearboxes like a manual does?

I'm getting the impression that the torque converter does the whole thing.

There are gears in an automatic transmission.

There is MUCH more info on that here:

That was a considerably detailed site. Normally you don't get near that level of detail from a "howstuffworks" page.

That certainly explained it.

Question

Okay Eigenvector. I am guessing with a name like that, either math major or more likely physics major. Who else uses eigen vectors?

funny thing is the auto companies are starting to move over to a auto trans that really is a stick shift type with clutch packs moveing the sliders inside to shift the gears. in combo with the convertor so you can stop and excell. and not feel the shift.
this dose away with the planitary gear sets and allows more hp to be used up front.

it's very big with the cars from japan and germany right now useing the jatco type trans. and is surely going to catch on here soon also if not already.
