Tranny fluid type

My Dad just changed my fluid.Advanced recommended Mercon V.Dad said mercon/dexron lll would work so thats what we used. Now my truck is seems to be winding out between gears. Its also hiccuping- Dad also replaced idle control valve. What type of fluid do you use?
Anyone had a their tranny rebuilt? My truck is dragging and hard shifting and thinking its time for a new one.How much will this set me back?
Also, do I need to reset computer after valve?

Which transmission? Most of the 5 speed transmissions recommend 80-90 gear lube. The M5OD (not very common in BII's) takes regular Mercon. The A4LD specifies regular Mercon. I don't think any of the stock transmissions for a BII called for Mercon V.

Could be that the vacuum modulator is bad, solenoids are bad, etc etc. Might want to also check for vacuum leaks and check to see if the kickdown linkage is intact. And no, neither the C-5 nor the A4LD called for Mercon V that I know of.

You can always go up on mercon ratings so there's nothing wrong with using V. Mercon V is actually the better fluid.

Also, not sure if the A4LDs had band adjustments or not? You can try checking the troubleshooting guides on http://www.autozone.com/repair_info.htm or get a haynes and/or chilton's manual and check that as well.

I use Amsoil in my A4LD and it shifts 500% better than stock. Plus it protects better for when I'm plowing snow here in Minnesota.
