I am thinking about buying a used X and I have found many V10's pretty cheap but I am just wondering how bad the mileage is ? Also has anyone done any mods to help get better mileage ? I was thinking about an underdrive pulley, e-fan and e-water pump, would those be worth doing ? Anything else worth doing to get a couple MPG ?
I have a 2000 XLT 4wd V-10 with 84,000 miles on it. I have had it for about 8 months but have not taken it on a long solo road trip. I get right about 10mpg around town. It doesn't really seem to matter how we drive it. I did make four trips with my travel trailer which weighs about 6000 pounds and we usually get right about 9mpg when towing.
I had an expedition before before with a 5.4, I was lucky to get better than 13mpg, and I would only get about 7.5-8mpg towing my trailer.
We have an '05 V10 Limited with about 24k miles. All of our driving so far has been in the Ozark Mountains (hills) in southern Missouri, and we are getting 11.6 mpg according to the mpg meter in the console. I have no idea how accurate that computer is, because my wife, who does most of the gassin' up, never remembers to write down her miles traveled before resetting the trip meter!
She's a fantastic driver, tho! Can't complain about her driving!
I think I can live with 11-12 mpg range. I had a lifted ranger and i was getting 14-15 mpg. The bad part about the ranger was I think the tank was only 16 gallons so assuming there is 2 gallons in the tank when the low fuel light came on I could only get about 210 miles out of a tank what a pain. Oh well I totaled the ranger. My camper was right at the limit for the ranger. I think camper is about 5000#. Plus I need the room for the family now.
I do a decent highway/local mix and I get 11.5 mpg easy on the pedal, and stay max of 60 hwy. I set the trip odometer after every fillup. If I am heavy on the pedal, or I gun it to the floor a few times, the mpg drops to 10.

its a 44 gal.... I looked under the hood the other day on mine and it says that its in some special class than has a maximum gas tank size of 45 gal... so that explains it
Ranger the tank on these things is huge. the spec say it is 44 gals 132L but i just filled mine up when the fuel light came on and it took 145L so either i have a bigger tank or the specs are wrong. i am getting about 10-11mpg around town after a few little mods

I just finished doing all spark plugs, put in a k&n filter, only the filter in the stock housing, and i just put on a flowmaster muffler, just cut out the old and put in the new not a catback system. I then went and drilled a hole into the front shrouding to create a ram air effect, i think someone makes a kit called a zoodad? but i just drilled a 2" hole and carefully aimed the end of the filter can at the hole.
If you drive like Gma and keep the RPMs under 2k, you can get 12 around town. I only get 14 on the highway if there is no wind, with a strong headwind, I get 12-13.

The conversion rate for Liters to gallons is 3.785L per Gallon.
132L= 34.87G
44G= 166.54L
Your X and ours has the same tank, 44G and about 166L.
With that, I have pushed mine 30 miles past when the overhead says zero miles to empty and have yet to put in 43 gallons. people get real nervous when the distance to empty is below ten and I tell them we will stop in 20-30 minutes and at an Amoco/BP station which was the reason for the 30 mile past 0...no good gas stations.
