Just purchased a project 55 F100 with no engine or trans, body is excellent condition. Want to know what engine and trans would be most common and provide the most selection of parts available. Also would like to change to a fiberglass tilt front end, but as of yet have not found a supplier, any suggestions? I am open to any direction except a chop of the body, I want to keep an original look to it.
Welcome to FTE!
The most popular will likely be the 5.0 (302) engine with a AOD or C4 transmission. Plenty of options available for this engine and it delivers good power and reasonable economy for these trucks. There will be plenty of recommendations and any number of them will be good choices...Good luck with your project.
I agree with Tom on the 5.0 (302) SBF for an engine choice. A 351W is almost the same sized package and has tons of options available, but a lot more hp.
Originally It probably had a 239. A 292 will have more parts and performance. That would be my first choice. The second choice would be a Windsor With good heads.
as for a tranny ya can make anything work ya want if ya got the money.
But I'm telling ya, once ya here a mild built Y Block run down the street with 2 inch open straight pipes on headers it will stay with ya like the tone of an old Knucklehead or Indian.
It used to be that everyone wanted a 400+ cube engine for a daily driver, but, with the availability of the 5.0 FI setups and their better mileage, they seem to be a lot more popular than ever before.
The general consenus is a 289-302, I would prefer a 5 speed trans and fuel injected. I am sure there are mounting kits and wire looms available to complete the job.

Most of the parts vendors supply everything you need to go 302/5spd. Mid50's, No-Limit, Hot Rod trucks in Ohio. The mounting will depend upon if you leave the stock straight axle or swap out. Best wishes
