A4LD-'90 Ranger
Truck has 185000+/- miles,w/in last 6 mo. has been slow to go into reverse,and isslow to go into OD,and/or converter lock up.Once engine(transmission?) is at operating temp.,all is good.I changed the filter(it was clean) and fluid.There was no sludge in the pan and though the fluid was dark, there was no burnt odor.There was a short period before I changed filter&fluid,when trans.(engine)flared as if it was in neutral (once),it shifted erratically a few times also.Any help/ideas would be appreciated Thanks.

Sounds like your trans is telling you it's getting close to rebuild time. The A4LD in my 91 2wd didn't like to go into reverse once in a while when cold. Then it didn't like to stay in forward low gear when cold. It would act like it was in neutral when I slowed down in the parking lot at work to make a turn out of the lot and wouldn't go back into gear for a little while. I had about 170k on it at the time it got rebuilt. See if you can find a good shop that will give a good warranty, like 12 mo and/or 12k miles. Find out if the shop has a good reputation for giving warranty work with no hassles. That could come in handy. Shopping around for a good price might help too.
