I would also note that Chrysler Corp. owned a nearly equal percentage of Cummins during the time period that Ford did.

M.B. did want to use a diesel of thier own in the ram but the dealers showed them how much of the sales market % they would loose. hard part for them "the dealers" to understand is how good those german made diesel motors really are as is being proven in the high box "dodge/freightliner" vans they now sell
lets also remember that m.b. also owns detroit diesel and freight liner along with mopar now. and M.T.U. diesels are also from m.b.

The bigger picture of the Cummins - Dodge Relationship

This is correct and helps explain why Dodge is still using Cummins. M.B. needs to keep a friendly relationship with Cummins to offer the option in Freightliner class 8 trucks. Ford sold their big truck line off about the same time they got out of Cummins. We all know that there are 3 engine builders in the class 8 truck open market. Cat, Cummins, and Detroit. Cat will not sell engines to Mercedes because of their construction market compitition. This is why freightliners have Detroits or Cummins. Depending on where you are running there are more of 1 than the other.

don't be so sure of that. a friend of mine runs freightliner tri axle dumps, and they all have cat engines in them. the oldest is 5 years old, and the newest 4 were delivered 2 weeks ago.

I have worked for Detroit Diesel for almost 15 years now and we are going to start building the MBE900 series after the first of the year hear in Detroit. Makes me wonder how long it will take to get that MBE900 in a Ram or a Superduty?

Daimler Chrysler buys a good number of Caterpillar engines for their Freightliners, Cat engines are a regular production line option on some products and the only engine available in some applications.

Isuzu

GM doesn't even own any of Isuzu any longer, They sold the last seven or seven and a quarter percent of Isuzu. The industry is pretty wierd now, ford and GM have gone in together to develope a high effenciency transmission they will both use. Isuzu builds diesels for a number of other companies including the european ford company and it goes on and on. An Austrian company is building a turbo diesel motorcycle that supposedly uses the same engine (I think its a DB) offered in the smart car in europe. I've seen pictures of it pretty sporty looking but it will probably cost more than my wife's F250 PSD did. Oh I drive an 84 F150 4x4 300six and a 96 Isuzu pu I bought for 800 its in great shape and gets 28 mpg I,m too damn chheap to buy a new vehicle, not since the 94 Tbird I had.
