Question manual transmission fluid

i just bought a 2001 ranger with a 5 speed.the the manual says use mercon automatic trans. fluid. is this the best oil to use or is there something better.also read that the rubber plugs on top of the tranny need to be changed around 100,000 miles anyone done this?

The rubber plugs just need to be changed when you get the chance. The best replacement is metal freeze plugs, though you can remove the plugs and just seal them with RTV or the like and replace.

Use the reccommended fluid, nothing else. The reccommended fluid will be listed in the back of the owner's manual, as you noted. Use only Mercon.

I change my manual trans fluid every 25k when i do my major service. I actually ATF Mercon V which is a synthetic blend that the newer fords run, i run the same stuff in the power steering also. You'll need 3 quarts to fill up the trans, i think it hold just under 3 quarts. It's a PITA to fill it up, i use the top off a gear oil bottle on the atf bottle to get it in there and it will take some effort. The size on the fill and drain plugs are pretty big so i just use a crescent wrench it's easier.
I got the right brass freeze plugs but haven't replaced the factory rubber ones cause it's a pain to get up there. I have no signs on leaking and i figure if they seal till my clutch goes out then i will just replace them then.

I use royal purple synthrtic, as I do in the t-case and rear diff, I use mobil 1 in the engine. It shifts better in cold weather with the RP, not as stiff. I hear a lot of guy's talking about replacing the rubber plugs with brass plugs from a tranny shop.

There are discussions about changing the trans. fluid in the M5OD as well as the issue of the rubber shift rail plugs in the technical information post at the top of the forum and both are worth a look.

I tried to use the steel freeze plugs with the recommended size on here, and they were a tad to small. so I just used a **** load of ultra copper on the old plugs. Let it sit for 24hrs to cure, and it's been leak free

Not that everyone has the money or the time to do this, but I came up with a "lazy man's" way to fill the trans when I serviced my F150. I used a 1 gallon Deck/Garden spray bottle, and cut the end off the wand, I then used a heat gun to heat the wand near the end, and made a "J" shaped end. I then put the ATF in the sprayer, pumped it up, and for $25 I had an easy way to refill my trans. It's just an idea, thought I'd share what worked for me.

Drain and fill plugs are 24mm. Better to use a socket or box end wrench if you can.
Also, I use a gear lube top like jimw411, but with a 4" piece of flexible tubing attached. Easier to stick in the hole on the tranny without spilling. If you do this, it is helpful to have an extra quart on hand, as it is difficult to get all of the fluid out of the container.

Bsmitty, where have you been? We have had a lot of tranny questions, for the older rangers. I would tell them to hang tight untill Smitty jumped in. Look at some of the past post, people are needing your advice.

I change all my stuff early, it's better for it, and will last longer. Even changing the fluid at 25k, it's pretty dirty and there a little scumm on the drain plug. If i went 60k without changing the fluid from what it looks like at 25k i can guarantee its causing excessive wear.

i use a pump ment for filling lower unit gearcases on outboards, fits a 1 qt bottle, about 2 bucks. or just pull the shifter out and pour it straight in. i currently have mobil-1 atf in my trans. id have to order the royal purple stuff.
