If your cluster won't come out far enough, it is probably being held by the speedo cable. Try getting under the truck and working some slack in the cable towards the dash, then do the same under the dash working the slack towards the cluster. All you will get is amybe another inch or so, but will be enought to reach behind the cluster and release the cable, and the two large plugs.
Might want to take another look at the wire, and the plug at the sending unit. Pretty rare for a gauge to fail.
