The "C3" or "C8" refers to the first two characters of the part # cast into the cover. An example would be C5AZxxxx the C is 6 and the 5 is 5 for a 1965 vintage part. No, I don't know why. The parts in question are 1963 or 1968, and I am guessing have different mounts. It has been a long time, but I *think* the part numbers are cast onto the front of the cover.
