Hey guys, I need an expert opinion on using rustoleum's "hammered finish" paint to paint my firewall , rad support and inner fenders. I read a few posts and seen the outcomes of a couple projects and I like the idea of a textured finish. Still, I have a few questions...
Should I strip the factory paint to bare metal or can I get away with sanding with 200grit?
Is it better to rattle can it or brush it on?
Can I apply it in cold weather? As of now it is -10°c outside and the truck is enclosed in a coverall shelter, so should I invest in a heater, or should I wait for spring?
Is there a better textured finish I should be aware of?
Oh BTW the truck is a 1988 f250 with 6" lift, SAS, and soon to be a propane, turbocharged 351w. Currently the front end is dissasembled so prep work should be easy enough and I like the hammered finish because it hides imperfections, oil and dirt.
Any paint should be applied in my opinion 50 degrees (+10 degrees celcius) or higher, if you can't get it that warm id only go as low as 45 degrees (+7 or so degrees celcius) but with a heat gun if you can't wait. What I would do is wait until a warmer dry spring day when you don't have to worry bout heating up an area and you can take you time.
Most paints I've used reccomend that it needs to be applied in temperatures above 15°C, I just have no experience with rustoleum so I figured I should ask. However, the cold weather should not be a problem anymore since my friend has allowed me to paint in his heated garage. If I should spray, I will throw plastic up on the walls.
So, has anyone brushed on rustoleum paint before? Does it leave brush marks?
