I just purchased a 2007 4x4 scew with the 20 inch rims and 3.73 limited slip axle. I know this topic has been beaten like a dead horse. My first tank and a half of city driving I am averaging 8.2 miles a gallon. Can that be right? I know when you buy a truck you shouldn't worry about gas mileage but 8.2 mpg. Is there a break in period or something? When the truck advertises for 14-18 I think it should be a at least 11mpg or something. The truck rocks but want to understand this issue. I also am light on the pedal. Any ideas.
Average your MPG by doing the math yourself and you will be surprised how inaccuate the computer is. It works based on averages. It will get more accuate as you learn to reset it properly (instructions in the manual). Also your first few tanks will be kinda hard on MPG, just like any new vehicle. It gets better, enjoy your new truck.
Hey Hermosa,
Maybe it's a beach cities thing. Your getting about the same as I am. I'm hoping once mine breaks in it will improve. I have ~2000 miles on my '06 XLT now.
I live in Redondo Beach, Hermosa is where I grew up.
It seems to me like these newer trucks have a bigger range of milage than older (pre-97) Fords do. My '95 F-150 351 4X4 got 12 mpg in town, on the highway, light foot, or hot rodding. My new 06 5.4 4X4 gets anywhere from 11 to 19. Averaging about 14 or so. It depends on loading, towing, how heavy my foot is that day, wind, speed and terrain. Altitude makes a difference also.
I have had mine since the 3rd of June, and only have 4600 miles on it. So I don't consider that totaly broke in yet.
Thanks for the feedback. Hey y-blockhead good to see your in the area. Beach city driving is tough, sometimes i have to switch it to four wheel to get through a flowerbed or two. keep me updated on your mpg progress. I just put in a new rhino lining and ordered a retrax cover to improve it a bit. Still a sweet *** truck.
I beat the crap out of my truck this last tank and still got 13 mpg with no highway driving. it's been wet out and I've been playing with the copious low end power. power slides are fun.
that computer thing is more of a visual aid to tell you to get off the gas. it's really innacurate. remember the early 90's when the Escort came out with that gas mileage light thing that would indicate premium shift points to max out your fuel economy. kinda along the same lines. probly wouldn't hurt to try the reprogram though.
Yay first post. No flaming please. Not to burst your bubble but in addition to my truck I have an 03 Nissan Maxima that I drive on a daily basis and my computer typically shows between 2 and 4 miles/gallon more than my actual average (miles driven/gallons used). Keep in mind that when you are stopped at a light or in traffic you are bringing down the average per the computer (no insult to intelligence there). I hope this isn't the case for your truck b/c that would put you at 4-6mpg which I would be pretty tough. I don't think our trucks are that hard on the gas.
I've gotten 12 on my truck ever since I got it, no matter how I really drive it, occassionaly I'll get like 13.1 lol, yeah it sucks but theres nothing I can do.. So i just deal with it lol

Not a city thing, more like a state thing. California oxygenated gas doesn't help at all. I have a 2006 supercrew 4x2 and I got it up to 12.7mpg
