Hi everyone,
New here, I hope someone can answer my question. I have a friend with a 62 Ford Fairlane with a 221 v8 and a two speed transmission. He's had an ongoing problem with the transmission leaking from several places, front pump, pan, servo cover on the side. It's been resealed a couple times, but it still continues to leak. Now he's thinking of a different trans, possibly a three speed c-4. The question is, will a c-4 bolt up to the 221 v8? Is there any specific year he needs to look for? Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.
My guess is a c4 from a 63 or 64 Falcon or Fairlane. These should be the correct length. Early '65s would be a good bet. Look for cars with 260s. Only early 289s used this pattern.
Once upon a time I had a 64 Fairlane with a 289 & c-4. The bell housings would swap out, the trannys from 63 to 68 should interchange. So the exact year of trannsmission shouldn't make that much of a diffrence if you can change out to the 5 bolt bell housing.
Ok, if I understand this right, I can use the bellhousing from the two speed tranny currently in the car and use it on a c-4 from 63 to 68. What about trannies from 69 and up? Am I correct in this? HELP!

Wrong.
The 2 speed transmission case and housing are all one part.
Ok. So I need at least a bell housing from a 62(?) 63 or 64 c-4 with a 5 bolt pattern and any c-4 up to 68? That is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack. Chances of finding a 5 bolt bell housing/tranny in this area is going to be impossible. Maybe I'll just try to talk my friend into swapping in a 5.0 from a Mustang or something and go with the full retro-mod thing complete with fuel injection.
give us a call we can help you out. and as to the car.it's a rare classic! stay stock and numbers matching it's worth more money that way. as to leaking some thing tells me you have some thing warped or miss installed or more likely a worn bushing causeing the unit to seem it has a leak.
we have 2 of the best builders here that have been around long enough to know that unit when it was new and surely know how to make it stop leaking.
A rare classic I will agree with, but this car will never be a 68 Shelby GT500KR. It's a 62 Fairlane 4 door with a 221 V8 and a 2 speed transmission. Hardly big money. The car is straight, but needs a paint job (faded red right now). The interior is about perfect on it. I've replaced the front and rear springs and he had another shop do a head job. He's not too concerned about keepeing it stock (we've added some aftermarket gauges and just recently put in a pertronix electronic ignition conversion), he just wants it reliable and leak free. Thanks for all your help. I will pass this information on to him and he can decide what he wants to do.
