While driving, the "Service Engine Soon" display came on. At that point, the truck's motor became very weak. I kept going hoping to get to work so it continued with the light on. At some point the light went out, and the truck drove normally. I got to work but when I went out to go to lunch, it happened again.
Now, the light is still on but the truck drives like normal. I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to get home because my home is 20 miles away and the nearest ford dealer is about 5 miles away. The diagnostic reader from my tuner shows now error code.
Also, this morning I was not able to start the truck. It didn't even crank but i hear clicking sounds under the dash. I disconnected the negative terminals from the two batteries then reconnected them. Then the truck started.
So told me that it may be the IDM or PCM? Or the CPS?
I would bet there is a 1316 code (IDM Codes stored) hiding in there. You are goning to need to get it read to narrow down the possibilities but kinda sounds like UVC wiring. The IDM's are pretty stout and it usually ends up being the wiring.
The clicking is a sign of weak batteries, need to get them load tested.
I agree with Alan. Batts are weak causing clicking sound under dash, charge them(or replace ,depending on how old they are) as far as the loss of power it does sound like one of your UVC harness' is coming loose and intermitently loosing contact. Just hope that its the even numbered side(drivers) so you don't have to remove all the other stuff above the VC on the pax side.
Goood Luck.

The funny thing is that I'm using a tuner and the built-in code reader, but it doesn't show anything. By the way, how do I get to the UVC wiring? What's "UVC" stand for anyway?
thanks for the help...
UVC= Under Valve Cover. Wiring harness to injectors and glow plugs that resides under the valve covers. There's a problem with the retaining plug clip coming loose.
I believe that some tuners can't read the powerstroke specific codes. The uvc, under valve cover harness. The wire harness for the glow plugs and injectors plug into the uvc harness that is built into the valve cover gasket. Here is a link with a picture http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2617...99870441rkwcyEThe wire harness with the yellow wires and others right below the green line is the uvc harness wires. That is the drivers side and it is in the same place on the passenger side.
I was able to drive home from work so I got brave and drove the truck to Costco to get two new batteries. Surprisingly, all the symptoms went away after installing the new batteries.
Now, the cabin lights acutually turn off once I close the door and click the lock remore button. Before it would stay on for about 10 minutes.
Now, the "door ajar" display is no longer there. Before it would be lighted even when the car was running and all the doors are closed.
Now, I just have to wait to see if the "service engine" light comes on again...
I also replaced the fuel/water filter. I dind't realized that the last time I replaced it was 11 months ago. Yikes.
I hate to be negative about this, but I think most of your problems will come back. I've never heard of new batteries fixing everything from the door ajar light to the VSM under the dash. I hope I'm wrong, but don't be suprised if part of your problems show back up.

By the way, can someone point me to a link with photos of the wiring of the IDM on the driver side and passenger side? If it's an intermittent problem, can I assume that the IDM itself is not the problem?
