Howdy all i have been gone for about 6 months on a deployment with the service. I have posted a couple of questions before and i am always satistfied with all the help you all have given me. I have a couple of questions right now.
I am working on a 1969 f-100 2wd 300 straight 6. 1 barrel carb.
1. Right before i left 6 months ago i replaced my distribuator and carburater so upon arriving i have timed the truck and tried getting my carb tuned as well as i can. With all that in mind it is still giving me problems it hesitates by that i mean when i put the pedal to the ground i have probably about 2 or 3 seconds where its not responding then it will start reving but as long as i baby the truck it drives ok. This morning i was driving down the road and i romped on it a little bit and that wasnt the greatest idea because i heard a loud boom and ended up blowing out my muffler. Also another thing to keep in mind i havent been able to find an air filter assembly but i drove it that way before leaving and i honestly dont remember it giving me that problem i would like to find a filter to fit but the 1 barrel is so small o.d. of the top is about 2 1/8 and i haven't been able to find an air filter assembly that will fit. I am going to check spark plugs tomorrow but they were changed about 8 months ago.
2. Well now that my muffler is no longer good and the rest isnt in the greatest shape i want to put on headers and run a new exaust i would really like some ideas or places to maybe start looking. Any suggestions would be appericiated. Thanks a lot.
Ryan,
Thanks for doing what you do/Did. Welcome Back and glad to have you home well & in good shape.
My 88 F-150 came from FoMoCo with a split header system going 2 into 1 for the EFI set up Ford uses on them. The 300 I-6 is called a 4.9L in the 88s but it's a plain old garden variety 300CID I-6 with all the EFI stuff added to it.
I would say that any F-150 from 87 thru 96 with the 4.9L I-6 Engine should have the same system & you could check it out by looking at one.
As for the flat spot on acceleration, check to see if your accelerator pump is working. To check it, with the engine off, look down into the venturi and pull the accelerator linkage, there should be a Squirt of gasoline sprayed into the carb every time you pull on the linkage, if it is doing that, the Accelerator pump is good. If not replace it of have it replaced if you are not comfortable doing it yourself.
Next start looking at P,P&C or Plugs Points & Condenser whuich you said you will do.
As for the air Cleaner, depending on hoe the top of the carb is forned, look at older Maverick, Falcon, Fairlane, amd earlier or later truck etc. O use the base of an OEM Filter & the top, but I cut the rest of it away so the who;e paper filter element id exposed om my other vehicles with carbs. . .

if memory serves me rite i think hedman ofers a set of headers to run dual exaust jegs or summit might help out OR you could get a exuast manifold from a latemodel and it'll give ya a dual pipes to as far as your lack of response problem id recheck your timing i used to run my old 300 at 36deg total adv
first, welcome home and thank's for your service.my dad had a 300,6cyl in his 76 f150.it had the 1 barrell carb on it too.they did make an addapter to fit that so you can run a 2 barrell carb.i put a 500 holly on it and it ran like a v8 after that.might be worth looking into if you want.
Try here----Cliffordperformance.net/--- He specializes in inline performance stuff, and I don't think there is any performance part he doesn't have

Welcome home oldbad69. I have a 67' 300 six it came with headers on it so i don't know what make they are i have found Clifford and hooker 'super comp' make headers for the 300 six. I had the same popping, back firing through carb and exhaust probs you are talking about. I had replaced my old one barrel two different times before getting so mad i replaced the whole intake system with an offenhauser intake with a 390 cfm 4 barrel carb. All the one barrel carbs i had bought in the past were not new they were remans, they always had either flat spots on acceleration or just wouldn't idle worth a crap. EFI would be the way to go but it's not cheap. Good luck with the truck and thank you for your service...
