title says it all i just bought a 90 ranger and it has realy hight oil pressure. it drives fine though could the gauge just be off what harm could it do if it does have realy hight oil pressure. thanks
Yes it could be the gauge and the most likely suspect? you could double check it by splicing in a direct oil pressure gauge. I also suspect the wrong weight oil especially in the climate your living in has turned alot colder. Probably requires 5W-30W oil?.? (Look in the owners manual for climate conditions).
Thicker oil will cause an restriction and any restriction would cause an increase in oil pressure. I not familar with Ford elect oil sending units operations. I think I read somewhere they are either sencing pressure or not and have little effect on pressures. IMO that's why they are no numbers on the gauges.
If I didn't want to fool with direct gauge troubleshooting, I would just change the oil and filter with the correct weight oil and see if that helped.
is the oil pressure high when start up or after driving for a bit? IIRC I think the oil pressure sending units on truck is just an idoit gauge. Says you either have oil pressure or not.
Theres an old trick to remove sludge from an engine. Pull out the drain plug and let about a quart of oil out. Dump a quart of ATF into the engine oil fill and drive about 50-100 miles like that. Change the oil and filter after that, i would suggest 5w30. Your engine should be clean after that, the ATF has a high detergent level and cleans it up. This is an old trick that lots of mechanics use to fix an engine that has blown a head gasket and needs to be cleaned out, or if you get some girls car in and she drove 15,000 miles without changing oil and you pull out the drain plug and it looks like hersheys syrup.
High oil pressure could cause the filter seal to blow. But in your case if the gauge is not the problem, then as mentioned you need a thinner oil, or the pressure relief valve is stuck closed in the oil pump.
Like most have said your guage is just an idiot light with a needle! It will read the same nomatter if you have 10lbs of pressure or 60lbs of pressure. The reading has nothing to do with how much oil pressure you have.
If you search this forum you will get alot of onfo on this & a way to turn your guage into an actual pressure reading guage.
