stupid question

I'm new to the diesel trucks and my question is what are the additives that some people are talking about. are they in the fuel or oil or both?

thanks

hi robb
the additives that are most prevalent are for fuel. There is a two fold purpose for the fuel additive ... first, the low sulfur fuels of today dont have the lubricating qualities that are needed for the fuel system on the idi engines. Because the fuel system is separate from the internal parts of the engine, they are lubricated using the fuel. Secondly, when the weather gets cold, the fuel has a tendency to gell and the additive to prevent gelling is necessary. There are several additves that serve one purpose and some serve both purposes. You would have to do some research in your area to make the decision and be satisfied with it. I would rather lean toward the lubricating side unless you are in a colder climate.
Hope this helps.
