I've got a 99 b3000... i'm just wondering. my temperature gauges has been on the low side lately, unless i drive for a bit on the highway. I've tried changing the temperature sensor as they're relatively cheap. i've got a new thermostat in there from last year, and i ruled it out as i can feel it open/close as the engine warms up... this leads me to believe that my fan clutch may be going/gone.
how freely should it turn when it (the engine) is cold? when i spin it using normal pressure, it pretty well stops as soon as i take my hand away...
what's your take on it?
ps sorry if this has already been posted. i did search and read through a lot of fan-clutch questions.. but i figure that it's better to spend 5 minutes on here than 110 bucks for a new one.
Even if the fan clutch is engaged all the time, the thermostat should be able to control the engine temperature properly (unless its below zero out). I suspect that the thermostat is a little sticky.
The fan will stop pretty quickly when you spin it by hand - every one I've ever done that to would act like you described.
Damn, they ripped me a new one on the one I got..... 25 with tax....... I hate it when that happenes........ lol
they told me it was 13.xx on the phone + tax, so I said get it. I go there and pick it up and it turns into 17.84.. So I complained to the management in an email, and they're refunding me the difference + 20%. just have to see a need to go back to the ripoffship and pick up the $$
I put a prestone 197 thermostat and radiator cap, and have had no problems. I changed them at 50k for piece of mind when i flushed the cooling system. My runs a lot in my opionion too, but ranger are known for that. They engage whenver you are idling or if the temp is 100+ it's on pretty much nonstop in traffic at that temp, and also my truck idles at 1,100 rpm when the fans on and it's hot out, instead of 600 like it normally does. You know your fan clutch is bad, if you hear it on all the time at lower temps.
