I was on my way to work this morning and my engine died when I was doing about 70mph.Now it will not start, The engine turns over fine but the wait to start light does not come on. Got towed home and took the other car to work. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting would be appreciated. I am new to diesels but have good mechanical and decent electrical skills.
If your 89 is wired like my 93 - check to see if the fuel shutoff wire came off or has no power. It is the wire going to the injection pump. If no power then we will go from there.
Also wonderng if the key switch has gone bad. This would cause the same thing and not feed power to the GP relay/controler. I had this problem a couple of years ago.
That is very possible. The switch had gone bad some time in the past because the previous owner had a push button start installed. To start the truck I would turn the key all the way, wait for the "wait to start" light to go out and the push the button to start the engine. If the switch has gotten worse that could be the problem. I didn't think of that because all of the other dash lights come on when I turn the switch. If the switch is bad any idea where I can get one? Do I have to replace the whole column? Thanks
Local auto parts store should have one with directions on replacement. Not sure if any special tools required. Ask at auto parts store they might lend/rent it to you. If needed.
Its not all that hard. You might want to pull the steering column right out to do it easily. I had to do my blinker switch which involved pulling the ignition apart and the switch as well. No special tools required.
