Toyota steering box

YEEEEEHAWWWW!!!!! Well, I finally found and bought a Toy steering box. Ebay, $126.00 shipped. Im psyched! Now a new problem. Anyone on here make the mounting brackets to mount them to the frame, or have drawings/dimensions of the bracket? Sorry, 100 clams for that bracket seems a bit insane!
As always, thanks for the help!

I made my own out of 3/8 X 2 flat bar. I c-clamped the box into the hole for the sector shaft and made certain it was squared up. Then, I crawled underneath and bent a short section of welding rod that follows the contour of the shape I needed. Its a lazy-s shaped arrangment that bolts underneath the upper frame channel side, passes next to the bolt holes for the steering box and then bolts to the top side of the lower frame channel side. I fired up the rosebud tip on the O/A torch heated the steel cherry red and bent the shape to match the wire bend. Then, I clamped the flat bar in place and slipped the steering box out and added two side pieces to bolt into the widest side of the frame channel (the web). Those pieces were triangular shaped were cut out of the same flat bar and were welded onto the larger s-shaped flat bar mount. I bolted in the two side pieces and tack welded them in. They were final welded off of the frame. I then carefully layed out the bolt holes for the drilling procedure. The mount is held by two new holes I drilled up top, two new ones down low and two one the side that were existing in the frame. The two lower holes were drilled with a pneumatic drill and a short 3/8 bit while the frame was jacked up with a floor jack. I had to increase the space between the underside of the frame and the leaf springs. There isn't a lot of room to drill those holes. The steering box mounts with four bolt holes to the flat bar.

Take a look at the ones on the net and you'll find they are all similar in shape. Mine has the same basic shape. I think I have a whopping 8 bucks invested in the steel. Go heavy on the steel flat bar because there is a fair amount of torque that the frame feels.

Thanks Chuck! Based on your drawings, I think I'll take a shot at making my own bracket. Is there that much torque on the box and frame in that area around the box that you think the 2X2X1/4" thick angle needs to be gusseted? For how short the piece is, I would THINK it'd be plenty strong....... but Ive been wrong before.

I have seen an update on this some where and can`t find it now.
It may not happen now as I believe that this policy has been changed, not possitive on it though. Beware that you still run the risk of getting junk and spam from having your email address harvested by outside sources.

I second the comment about getting spammed with junk e-mail. I put my good e-mail address on my web site and I'm now getting clobbered with tons of junk stuff every day. Share via the private messaging system (PM) but don't put your address in posts.

I'd think it would depend on how heavy a piece of angle you use, but yes there is quite a bit of load on the mount. The drag link setup will directly transfer any road shock directly to the gearbox. I do believe tho that my design, since it ties into the top and bottom rails as well as the side of the frame, should be substantially stronger than the others on the market and a way lot stonger that the stock box mounting. I just like to err on the side of safety.
I'd just like to say that I am retaining the copyright on my design, since I am considering manufacturing them, but do authorize you to produce 1 unit for your own use only. I do not in any way warrant the safety of the design or it purpose, I leave it up to you to determine that for yourself. (std fine print for my protection!)

Chuck, whats that say, wayyyyyyy down at the bottom there? Cant quite make it out.
If you think you'll be making them to sell Chuck, I have NO problem being the 1st to buy one. If you'd rather do that, shoot me a PM and we'll talk. I do like your idea much better than the design thats out there.
