Hi folks,
Gotta an 04 F150 S/C FX4. Seem to be getting a kinda high-pitched whining
sound coming from the back(no not the wife!) under slight acceleration at
around 45-50 mph then goes away around 60. Not super loud but enough to
hear with the windows up. Dealer of course road-
tested and can't hear it. Thought maybe its the rear-end or u-joint. There is
a TSB out for something in these diffs but not sure if related. Any help greatly
appreciated. Cheers.

I had the rear end done 4 times, finally they got it right. I think the dealer just got tired of me coming back, so they spent the time to do it right this last time. Just like new now 5,000 miles after the work was done.

I had exactly the same problem and the dealer told me it would do no good to call Ford. I didn't, I wrote them and got a positive response in two weeks but no action. Wrote them again with the same results and then again. After the 4th letter (with copies of all previous ones and a log of who I talked with and when and what the discussion was), I got a call for a manager. He sent me to another dealership who corrected the problem after the three failed attempts at the first dealership. They had left the carrier bolts loose and it wore the housing resulting in the replacement of the assembly. Had they listened to me months earlier, they could have saved the cost of the housing. The secret is persistance and good records. They should have known better than to mess with a retired old F**t who has time to irritate everyone and enjoys it.
You know that the Explorer's have basically the same problem. I have an 04 with the LS 373 rear and it started whining with about 10K miles on the clock. I let it go until just recently because I had read a lot of posts about how Ford was changing the rears with new ones from Ford and that wasn't fixing the problem. Then the individual Ford dealers started rebuilding them on site and were having good success. I took mine in and so far it has been very good. We had the whine when the speed was between 50 and 62 and then it would get quieter but not completely gone. I am not sure if this is the same problem as yours but it may help. If it is still under warranty maybe you can get them to rebuild it. Greg
I got so used to it that I am not sure if I still have it! In any case at 53K for my '04, is it too late to get it fixed under warranty? How much would it cost? Am I doing damage in not getting it fixed? Thanks!
I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. A friend of mine has listened to his whine for over 300,000 miles. If you had an older Ford truck or several of the other brands, other noises would drown out the whine and you would never know it. If it does go bad, you won't do it any additional harm. A friend of mine had to get a replacement last year (05 3.73 LS 9 3/4 gear) due to an accident and I think he bought a used assembly for around $600.
Depending which bearing is gone prices can vary. My old blazer had an axle bearing go bad and I left it so long it got chewed up inside and messed up the pinion bearing.I ended up having to replace them all. Remember friction=heat. Heat=bad. Get it fixed sooner than later IMO.
