In the driver side front wheel well attached to the frame and engine mount is mini shock looking cylinder. Am I right that it is a stabilzer of some kind? Do they ever go bad? If so how does one know?
From what I recall, it's designed to dampen the vibrations on the 4.0L engine. It's long gone for all you guys, only lasts a year or so from what they told me. You can replace it, I don't know if you'd even notice the different. I was thinking about it but I've got no idea where to get the shock tube from.
From the last thread, no it's not a maintenance item...it goes bad and...that's the end of the story basically. No replacement required unless you want.
Well I did a seach and I found this old thread. This little shock on my 1998 Ranger is rusted out and leaking severely. I was wondering if anyone was able to source this shock from somewhere else other than Ford. I was quoted like $300.00 for the entire bracket and shock. Its only a $10.00-$15.00 part. Most of of the writing on the part has rust off. It appear to have made by a company called "___B-O-SHOC". This first part of the name is missing. Thank you in advance.
I think I was able to sort out the manufacture and it is STAB-O-SHOC. They seems to only sell to OEM suppliers. However, they do have a pretty cool part look up site:
The only issue is that most of writing on my shock is rusted off. I can make out only this much and I am not sure it is correct :5339EK-0000N 055/98" Woould anyone be able to confirm this is correct?
