Block heater cord

Ok I went to the International dealership (twin states truck) and gave them the Z3500043 part number for the heater cord and according to their computer that is not a valid part number. However a 6.0 guy came in the other week and ordered one and had not picked it up yet, the parts guy remembered and showed it to me and it is the right one. The part number on it was 1686485C91. My cost was $43 and change. Figured I would let everyone know that might be hunting one of these suckers down inthe next couple of weeks. (wish I had it last week 18 a couple nites here and had to crank up an leave quickly on a callout twice in the middle of the night.......grr hated to do that to the truck but got the cord and will be installing it tomorrow)

18F or -8C really isnt too bad as long as your not running 15W40 and didnt give it at least 5 minutes of idle time. I wont even plug mine in unless it is -5C or 23F. For those kind of temps I think a 240W oil pan heater might be a better choice vice the 1200W block heater. One day I left my truck plugged in and it was very mild out, my scan gage indicated the coolant temp was at 35C or 95F when I started it but it still started rough because the oil was cold, making me think that warmer oil might be better than a warm head. I have 0W40 in it now so cold starts worry me less now, but I do think every diesel should have a oil pan heater in cold weather, espicially these internationals that are using the oil to fire the injectors, or use a synthetic for cold weather.

I purchased the cord from a local International dealer and paid $24.00 and I believe that is in the range of what others have paid...Just a little FYI..

Did you get the Block heater element also? If you did then you don't need it..

I know when I went in with the part number for the cord I got off FTE they handed me the whole thing Cord and element..

Well the price was one of the things that threw me as well considering what the others here have paid. When I put it on tomorrow I will report back. It may not be the right cord afterall.

Since Ford started leaving the cord off; I've always thrown that in as part of the purchase deal. Doubt if dealers pay much for the cord and has always been easy to ask for.

Ok update, I finally got around to installing it tonight. I routed it similar to the way Ford Doctor reccomends. It is definatly longer, alot longer, about 2' would be able to stick out the front of the bumper on the passenger side. You definatly have enough cord without extending it to do Jeff's marinco mod on the driver side valance. BTW the end that plugs into the heater has a 90' end on it, making it a cleaner install.
