The 9 inch clutch type limited slip was introduced in 1959. Besides the usual rear end tag..there is a separate tag with just the letter L on it. Yes, I know chances are slim that tag might still be on a rear end...but I thought I might as well pass the info along regardless.
I have never seen nor heard of a 3.54 9 inch ratio. I guees that doesn't mean there isn't one but I have been around some older guys that have taught me the things I know so I kind of rely on them and the net for my info.
Not sure if it was a factory ratio or not (I am pretty sure it was but not 100%) but you can get almost any ratio you want in a ford 9" gear click HERE for richmonds catalog it shows a 3.50 and a 3.55 ratios, and I know I have seen 3.54 just can't remember which company it was.
> There is no such thing as a 3.54 for a 9 inch axle.
I should have said 3.55, which is what it could have come with from the factory with the 3.54 Dana 44 front axle. Which I have owned in old 4x4 Ford trucks.
Ford used a 3.555555, which they rounded up to the 3.56 in the late 50's;
You will find these typically in WAR, WAA, or WAB cases during the days
when the tags were simply numbers. The tag would only read "356".
Correct me if I am wrong, the 3.50 9" came in the 80s (ex: full sized broncos). A 1979 truck would have the 3.54.
You're wrong - you've got it exactly backwards: the 3.54 came in the '80s, and then only on those silly little 8.8s.
And any of the trucks he listed in his signature line would have come with 31-spline axles.
Basically, E-100/150 vans came with 28-spline axles, pickups and all 4x4s (full-size at least) had 31-splines.
I still have an extra third member from my 85 Bronco 9" LS. Its 31 spline but I'm confused about the ratio. In the 80's I thought they called it a 3.55, but now I see replacements are 3.50 ...Guess it's a 3.50 http://broncograveyard.com/bronco/c-...rd_members.htm

3.55 and 3.50 aren't names - they're mathematical ratios between the ring and pinion.
If your Bronco has a 9", then it most likely has 3.50 gears - in the rear at least. If it has an 8.8" axle, then it probably has 3.55 gears. Front axle ratios are different, obviously. They are rarely an exact match from the factory.
And you can always tell the ratio with a little math:
if it's out of the truck, divide the number of teeth on the pinion gear into the number of teeth on the ring gear.
If it's in the truck, jack up one wheel, put a visible mark on the driveshaft, and with the trans (or transfer case) in neutral, rotate the one wheel two complete revolutions.
The number of times the driveshaft turns is your ratio.
